How I Like The Rolling Stones: The Leftovers, pt. 1
The Stones do a good job getting the word out about their discography, and How I Like The Rolling Stones: The Albums, pt. 1 names eight early albums (including two hits compilations) I like having on the shelf. So it’s not like there’s much need for an “introductory” playlist. But there’s still seven studio albums from their first decade I don’t need, with enough quality deep cuts within to fill a hypothetical More Flowers I wish the band would release for my benefit.
This playlist isn’t a complete collection of every song from '64-'73 that I like but don’t own. I took only one track from each album given a 7 or lower, plus an early contribution to a Decca Records compilation, the B-side to “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and an unfinished Let It Bleed outtake (released on ABKCO’s barrel scrape Metamorphosis) still fiery enough to kick the playlist off. Of the ten songs included, only “Sway” and “Connection” have been heard at Stones shows this century, and I don’t know if the other eight would make any fan’s Top 50. The rollicking fun, angry rebukes, drowsy regret and psychedelic whimsy here is familiar, even if the individual tracks aren’t. But if you only know a classic LP or three by the band, or just Hot Rocks, this should be an enjoyable listen that might inspire some investigation despite itself. LP sounds were added to increase the “found this budget comp used for 3 bucks, might be Canadian” feel, as that’s the vibe I’m going for. Granted, a foreign budget comp with surprising flow.

While I have no plans to create another playlist, I'm labeling this one pt. 1 anyway out of respect the for the 50 years of activity that followed.
